“Different Sides Of The Same Coin” – Chyrel Jackson & Lyris Wallace
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Different Sides of the Same Coin” presents a contemporary and bold compilation of poetry, offering insights from the viewpoint of two Black sisters and authors. This enduring anthology of poems stands out with its uniqueness and invigorating essence. This collection delves into the depths of the human experience, addressing themes of life, love, grief, separation, and anguish. The words are timeless, imbued with candor and unexpected elements. The vivaciousness, relevance, and authenticity of Black Expression shine brightly in this work. It ingeniously intertwines the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance with the challenges and realities of 2019’s societal struggles, giving us a fresh perspective. Through this compilation, we’re reminded once again of the indispensable role that written and spoken word play in upholding African American Literature.
A captivating book that invites you to snuggle up in a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee and immerse yourself in its pages for hours. From the moment I encountered the first page, I was transported to a different world. The author’s initial prose evoked a scene of dimmed lights, placing me on a stage with a cool jazz melody playing softly in the background. An attentive audience sat before me as I recited stanzas in harmony with the music, creating a vivid atmosphere reminiscent of a Jazz and Poetry Night Club.
Continuing to read, I delved into the complexity of the author’s articulate expressions. The words on the pages became a roller-coaster of emotions, stirring a multitude of feelings within me. The poems explored relatable experiences, both personal and observed in others, creating a deep and resonant connection. The prosetry’s depth and authenticity pierced through to the core of the soul.
I found great admiration in the author’s incorporation of the rich Black roots and heritage, reflected in the dialect and language of the African culture. As someone with a Native Caribbean Islander background, I, too, appreciate this inclusion, which adds another layer of significance and relatability to the work.

Many favorites, so many to choose from. When reality comes knocking, what do you do? Love the uniquely crafted titles that captures the reader such as myself to want to explore its hidden treasures. I personally love to read stories that are unique, and has a twist. This book encompasses my love for things outside the norm. It goes against the grain of similarity.
Love letters and Personal Diaries of the Author, mutually relatable.
I am not alone in this thing called “Life”.One can feel the Spiritual connection on every page. The title to the book encompasses my belief that there is a spiritual side to everything. Whether through interpretation, or the very nature of that person or thing itself. For example: the Bible to some people who read the words, just see ‘words’ on a page written by man. But those to whom are spiritually enlightened to see the Spiritual realm of things, not only the natural, sees more than just curvatures on a page; they see and feel the influence of the true “Author and Creator” who gave life to those words and the Creator of man himself.
A Double-Edged Blade.
The author’s very soul seems to flow through the pages of this book, creating a palpable connection.
Music’s rhythm, so cherished, transmuted into words, painted anew.
Certain poetic missives caused a blush, unveiling an imbalance in the love letters landscape, which mostly cater to the feminine realm (a noble focus, honoring our Queens). My own verses often target the beloved gender. Yet, reading as though a love note were mine kindled an intimidating insight. It forced me to observe the “Other Face of the Coin,” so to say. This unveiled that I, like many men, harbor this desire, hidden underneath our “macho” facade. Despite being portrayed as tough and unfeeling, we are human and secretly yearn for words of affection tailored to us. When was the last time I received such a letter? I believe I voice the sentiment of other men, expressing that we long to grasp love’s words meant solely for us as men.
This tome unveils a fresh lens to perceive the world, inspiring how I’ll express my prose and tales henceforth. This book is an enduring companion. The artist wields the brush of imagination, painting art upon canvas pages.

Suggested for mature readers.
Character: Rated 5 Stars
The characters within the book perfectly align with the theme. The book exudes personality, showcasing the author’s creative wit, vivid imagery, and boundless imagination.
Tone: Rated 5 Stars
The tone of the book is vibrant and captivating, reminiscent of a Broadway play. It skillfully weaves suspense, thriller elements, and addresses serious and relevant subjects, seamlessly blending various genres.
Climax: Rated 5 Stars
The book is masterfully crafted. While it consists of a collection of poetry and prose rather than a novel, each story within its unique category consistently delivers climactic moments.
Ending: Rated 5 Stars
Although an exceptional read, I deduct half a star due to occasional challenging words. These instances may prompt readers to pause and decipher the words in the context of the story, slightly disrupting the narrative’s flow. This is not the fault of the authors but rather indicates the book’s above-average sophistication in its syntax. This echoes a broader debate among writers about whether to cater to readers or write for oneself.
